Background

Research indicates that those who are worried about their health are more likely to change their in-appropriate behavioural-related risk factors. A national survey was undertaken to determine adults who correctly perceive and actually undertake in-appropriate behavioural-related risk factors (smoking, physical activity, alcohol intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, weight and psychological distress) and are worried about their health.

Change4Life alcohol campaign warns of ‘sneaky drinks’ | Department of Health

A Change4Life campaign launches today to raise awareness of the health risks associated with drinking regularly over the guidelines. Four weeks of nationwide TV advertising, beginning today, form the main part of the campaign. The advert shows how drinking can easily ‘sneak up on you’ and encourages people to check their drinking online using the Change4Life Drinks Checker.

Deaths attributable to alcohol fall with rise in minimum price, study finds | BMJ

A 10% increase in the average minimum price of alcohol was associated with a 32% reduction in wholly alcohol attributable deaths, a Canadian study has found.1 The finding will lend support to the proposed introduction of a minimum price in England and Wales.

Alcohol alliance responds to government’s minimum price strategy | BMJ

Setting a minimum price for alcohol and banning multibuy deals is a good policy, says the Alcohol Health Alliance in its response to the Home Office’s public consultation on its alcohol strategy for England and Wales.1 But the price set should be 50p (€0.6; $0.8) per unit, not 45p, as this would save more lives and prevent more crime, the alliance says.

Minimum price for alcohol is proposed for England and Wales

The government has announced a consultation on setting a minimum price for alcohol of 45p (€0.55; $0.72) a unit, a move welcomed by the BMA and other members of the Alcohol Health Alliance.

Over the Limit: The Truth about Families and Alcohol, warns of a silent epidemic of alcohol misuse by British families. The report warns that too many parents remain oblivious to the negative effects that alcohol can have on their parenting.  An alarming 19% believe alcohol has a positive effect on their parenting ability and 62% of parents say that their drinking behaviour has no impact on their family at all.
