NICE recommends new treatment option for people with common heart condition

In final guidance published today (27 February) NICE has recommended apixaban (Eliquis, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer), in accordance with its licensed indications, as an option for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in some people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The guidance also recommends that the decision about whether to start treatment with apixiban should be made after an informed discussion about the risks and benefits of apixaban compared with warfarin, dabigatran etexilate and rivaroxaban, and in light of a person’s current level of international normalised ratioi (INR) control if they are already taking warfarin.

Doctors’ contracts fit for the 21st century

The Government has today published two independent reports about doctors’ contracts.

The reports commissioned by the Government highlight the need to change doctors’ current contracts, both for consultants and for junior doctors, to make them fit for purpose to support the modern NHS. The changes will promote higher quality medical education and research, motivate doctors to achieve excellent results for patients and ensure that contracts remain fair, affordable and fit for the future.

Tuberculosis in General Practice: Online Course

The number of Tuberculosis cases in the UK has been increasing over the past 20 years. Early diagnosis is vital and GPs play a key role preventing, identifying and treating patients with TB.

Using case studies this course will increase your knowledge and skills in identifying patients with pulmonary and extrapulmonary symptoms. It also highlights risk factors, the importance of screening, limitations of vaccination and contact tracing. This course was developed in partnership with TB Alert and the Health Protection Agency.

GP IT services: Operating model published

The NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB) has today published a document, Securing Excellence in GP IT Services, explaining how the management of IT systems for GP practices will be organised from April 2013. It enables clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) to make decisions to suit particular local requirements, ensuring information and technology supports clinical commissioning to improve health outcomes for patients.

Head of NHS praises GPs’ plans for commissioning

The head of the NHS in England has praised GPs’ early plans for how they will take charge of commissioning care services from next year.

David Nicholson, the NHS’s chief executive, told MPs on the parliamentary health select committee that he had been impressed with the plans made so far by the new GP led clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) as part of an ongoing authorisation process.
