Increased cancer awareness among British adolescents after a school-based educational intervention: a controlled before-and-after study with 6-month follow-up

BMC Public Health | Abstract | Increased cancer awareness among British adolescents after a school-based educational intervention: a controlled before-and-after study with 6-month follow-up.
Background
There is a lack of evidence around the effectiveness of school-based interventions designed to raise adolescents’ cancer awareness. To address this deficit this study assessed the impact of an intervention delivered in the United Kingdom by Teenage Cancer Trust on: recall (open question) and recognition (closed question) of cancer warning signs; knowledge of common childhood, teenage, male and female cancers; awareness of the relationship between cancer and age; anticipated medical help-seeking delay; perceived barriers to seeking medical advice about cancer; and examined variation of intervention effect by gender and whether adolescents reported that they knew someone with cancer. It matters what you measure: a systematic literature review examining whether young people in poorer socioeconomic circumstances are more at risk of chlamydia

Abstract

Background England has invested in chlamydia screening interventions for young people. It is not known whether young people in poorer socioeconomic circumstances (SEC) are at greater risk of chlamydia and therefore in greater need of screening.

Objective To conduct a systematic review examining socioeconomic variations in chlamydia prevalence or positivity in young people.

A theory-based online health behavior intervention for new university students: study protocol

BMC Public Health | Abstract | A theory-based online health behavior intervention for new university students: study protocol.

This article is available freely via Open Access. Please click on the above link to view it fully.

Abstract (provisional)

Background

Too few young people engage in behaviors that reduce the risk of morbidity and premature mortality, such as eating healthily, being physically active, drinking sensibly and not smoking. The present research developed an online intervention to target these health behaviors during the significant life transition from school to university when health beliefs and behaviors may be more open to change. This paper describes the intervention and the proposed approach to its evaluation.

Does the local food environment around schools affect diet? Longitudinal associations in adolescents attending secondary schools in East London

BMC Public Health | Abstract | Does the local food environment around schools affect diet? Longitudinal associations in adolescents attending secondary schools in East London.

This article is available freely via Open Access. Please click on the above link to view it fully.

Abstract (provisional)

Background

The local retail food environment around schools may act as a potential risk factor for adolescent diet. However, international research utilising cross-sectional designs to investigate associations between retail food outlet proximity to schools and diet provides equivocal support for an effect. In this study we employ longitudinal perspectives in order to answer the following two questions. First, how has the local retail food environment around secondary schools changed over time and second, is this change associated with change in diet of students at these schools? Continue reading

Effect of gender on the association between weight status and health-related quality of life in adolescents

BMC Public Health | Abstract | Effect of gender on the association between weight status and health-related quality of life in adolescents.

Abstract (provisional)
Background

Some studies have investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among adolescents, but their results have been discrepant and few paid attention to the role of gender. The present investigation aimed to assess the relationship between weight status and HRQoL in adolescents and to verify whether it was similar in boys and girls. Continue reading

Designing evidence-based treatments for youth with multiple and complex needs: a modular practice elements approach

Emerald | Advances in Dual Diagnosis | Designing evidence-based treatments for youth with multiple and complex needs: a modular practice elements approach.

An NHS Social Care Athens account may be required to view this article in full.

Purpose – Young people receiving services for substance use problems often experience high rates of other psychosocial problems in addition to mental disorders. This has implications for design of effective interventions. There is a lack of concisely organised practical information to help organisations serving this population establish contextually relevant and rigorous approaches to the design of evidence-based interventions. This paper aims to focus on these issues. Continue reading

The prevalence of physical, sexual and mental abuse among adolescents and the association with BMI status

via BMC Public Health | Abstract | The prevalence of physical, sexual and mental abuse among adolescents and the association with BMI status.

This article is available freely via Open Access. Please click on the above link to view it fully.

Abstract (provisional)

Background Studies among adults show an association between abuse and Body Mass Index (BMI) status. When an aberrant BMI status as a consequence of abuse is already prevalent in adolescence, early detection and treatment of abuse might prevent these adolescents from developing serious weight problems and other long-term social, emotional and physical problems in adulthood. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of physical, sexual and mental abuse among adolescents and examined the association of these abuse subtypes with BMI status. Continue reading

A cluster-randomized controlled trial of strategies to increase adolescents’ physical activity and motivation during physical education lessons: the Motivating Active Learning in Physical Education (MALP) trial

BMC Public Health | Abstract | A cluster-randomized controlled trial of strategies to increase adolescents’ physical activity and motivation during physical education lessons: the Motivating Active Learning in Physical Education (MALP) trial.

This article is available freely via Open Access. Please click on the above link to view it fully.

Abstract (provisional)
Background

The physical activity (PA) levels of many children and adolescents in Australia are currently insufficient to promote health benefits. Physical education (PE) programs aim to promote PA and reach nearly all school-aged children, but PA levels within PE lessons are often low. PE teachers may influence children’s motivation to be physically active in PE lessons, but little is known about teacher strategies that effectively motivate children to participate in PA, and few intervention studies have examined motivational strategies in PE. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of three motivational strategies, each based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT), on PA levels, and their hypothesized antecedents, during year 8 PE lessons. BMC Public Health | Abstract | Exploring mediators of accelerometer assessed physical activity in young adolescents in the health in adolescents study — a group randomized controlled trial.

Background

There is a shortage of information about the factors that mediate physical activity intervention effects which involve youth. The purpose of this study was to examine whether personal, social and physical-environmental factors mediated the intervention effect on physical activity and whether gender and weight status moderated mediated effects in the Health In Adolescents Study — a school-based intervention to promote healthy weight development among young adolescents.
